FANPAC’s Influential Legends Phone Covers – Pink Floyd

FANPAC offer some of the finest music iphone covers around, especially of musicians who either reinvented a genre or were extremely influential and moulded artists as we now know them today. Pink Floyd were one of the most experimental groups of their time, and they influenced many great artists recording today.

In 1965, after playing in previous cover bands performing at private functions, University friends Rodger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Syd Barrett, eventually founded Pink Floyd. After deemed too radical for their time and turned down to appear on TV show Read Steady Go! – “The definitive music show of the day”, they continued with their rhythm and blues set, eventually receiving paid bookings and appearing at London’s premier gig venue The Marquee Club. It was at this gig their sounds were noticed by producer/manager, Peter Jenner who was impressed with the “sonic” effects of singer and guitarist, Syd Barrett.

1966 saw Pink Floyd gaining popularity gigging with London’s underground scene in clubs such as The Roundhouse and The Marquee. It was at The Roundhouse, performing in front of 2000 people to celebrate London Free School’s magazine International Times that Sir Paul McCartney witnessed Pink Floyd’s psychedelic rock and lavish light show – the impressive visuals became their trademark when playing live, and throughout their career, these elaborate and stunning stage lighting effects became a show in themselves.

In 1967, Nick Mason approached David Gilmour in the hope he’d join the band – he did, making them a five piece until Syd Barrett’s behaviour became erratic due to his use of LSD. In 1968, David Gilmour became their permanent lead guitarist and singer after the band chose not to pick up Barrett for a gig.

Out of their 14 studio albums, their most influential were Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). These albums and their live acts influences many artists such as U2’s The Edge, who said he bought his first delay guitar pedal after hearing the guitar chords from “Dogs” (Animals). David Bowie, another inspirational artist in his own right, called Syd Barrett a major inspiration and influence to his music. Other bands influenced by Pink Floyd were Queen, Tool, Kraftwerk, Queensryche, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead and The Orb.

Guitarist

Guitarist App - Best Ever - ROCK N ROLL

Guitarist App - Best Ever - ROCK N ROLL

The simple title says it all; this app reached 14 in the top 100 apps list – no mean feat with the trillions of apps available. It was even used by Apple in their Guided Video Tour for the 3GS.

This app is a guitar simulator used when you find yourself with out your axe and inspiration strikes. You can record your song and play it back. The fretboard is scrollable right up to the 21st fret. You can even record a rhythm track and lead, each with their own effects, into one track. Pitch bends are achieved by dragging on the strings, and a really cool feature is tipping your phone to deploy the WhaWha and Whammy effects. Another technique are the use of ‘hammer-ons’, the app removing the concept of string plucking to allow you to concentrate on fretting the notes – simply tap the string to play the note, and either tap a higher note or ‘pull off’ to a lower note to gain speed in solos. The Tab Guitar takes the opposite path from the ‘hammer-on’ in removing the ability to fret the notes, this time allowing you to concentrate on plucking tor strumming (chords) the notes.

So for $3.99, practise your scales, fine-tune your techniques, record your inspirations, and rock out without your axe.

The effects pedals include: Hot Fuzz, Wahsabi (Wah pedal), Sybil (duel chorus), HK-2000 Delay, Kompressor (best with power chords), Adrenaline (Treble boost), Q-36 Space Modulator (Multi-pattern modulation) and the Trembler (Tremolo).

There are over 2000 built in chords, scales and fret positions, which you can by assign to the rows of buttons at the top of the screen. These buttons give you access to all the chords and scales you need to create a song, and lets you switch between strumming chords and playing melodies.

I’ll start this with a quote from the master of metal himself, Dave Mustaine: “Better than a private lesson, and more fun than any guitar game, my app actually teaches you how to play guitar, and with the leader boards you shred while you kick your friends asses.”

Joel McIver in the “100 Greatest Metal Guitarists Of All Time” ranked Megadeth’s front man at number 1, so you can’t go wrong learning a lick or two from this guy.

Dave Mustaine teamed up with the makers of the previous app creator, Rock Prodigy to bring a touch of metal and speed to the iPhone. Learn and play Megadeth classics such as “Holy Wars”, “Tornado” and “Public Enemy No.1”.
